Cherry Blossom Viewing Q&A

Every April, a path through its grounds of Japan Mint is opened to the public for one week so that visitors can enjoy cherry blossom viewing. The event is held in mid-April, when the cherry trees that line the riverside lane are in full bloom.
Located along the river, the premises of Japan Mint have been picturesque place since olden days. It has been called "SAKURANOMIYA", or "Palace of Cherry Trees," because cherry blossoms bloom abundantly here every spring.
The cherry trees located on the grounds of Japan Mint were transferred from the mansion of a feudal lord owned by the Toudo Domain. Since the collection of cherry trees includes many unique varieties, in 1883 Mint Director ENDO Kinsuke suggested that the cherry blossoms should be admired not only by mint employees but by all residents of Osaka. From that point forward, the path along the riverfront has been opened to the general public for one week each year when the cherry trees are in bloom.
Apart from a period of time during the war when the path was closed, "Cherry Blossom Viewing at Japan Mint" has been well-known as a special spring event in Osaka. During the event, hundreds of thousands of visitors gather to enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms and the picturesque setting along the river.
"Cherry Blossom Viewing" is held at Japan Mint, Osaka.
(ADDRESS: 1-1-79 Temma Kita-ku Osaka prefecture)
The closest station to the gate of "Cherry Blossom Viewing" is Temmabashi station on the Keihan Railway or Subway Tanimachi Line.
The distance is approximately 560 meters.
There are 335 cherry trees of 138 varieties in 2022. About 80 percent of the trees are double-flowering varieties.
To make people feel close to cherry blossoms, since 1975 one variety is chosen each year as "Blossom of the Year." The selection is based on the shape, the scarcity, origins of the name, and the past flowering conditions of the chosen variety.
It is said that Benitemari, Otemari, Kodemari and Yorozakura are rare kinds of cherry and are scarcely seen in any other places.
The dates of "Cherry Blossom Viewing" are decided based on the flowering forecast. The mint employs a cherry blossom consultant who forecasts the appropriate dates by considering the flowering conditions from previous years, temperature, etc.
