National Treasures are government-designated tangible cultural properties selected as peerless treasures of the Japanese people on the basis of their importance to world culture. The National Treasure Medals comprise a series of medals on the theme of precious national treasures and their attendant cultural properties in Japan.

It has been over 10 years since Japan Mint started this Program in 2007. This year we have chosen Jisho-ji (Ginkaku-ji), which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.”

Obverse: The Kannon Hall and the sand-made Kogetsudai and Ginshadan are depicted in relief. According to one theory, Kogetsudai means “moon viewing platform” and Ginshadan has a role of reflecting light at night.

Reverse: The Togudo Hall is depicted in relief, with the frosting finish processing technique used for the surface of the pond.
