National Treasures are government-designated tangible cultural properties selected as peerless treasures of the Japanese people on the basis of their importance to world culture.
The National Treasure Medals comprise a series of medals on the theme of precious national treasures and their attendant cultural properties. For this series we have chosen Yakushiji Temple, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.”

Obverse: The design depicts the East Pagoda and a celestial figure playing the flute from the Water Flame (a bronze charm to ward off fire) on its roof, which appear in relief against the background of the prints of Shakyamuni Buddha’s feet.

Reverse: The inscription from the East Pagoda in the center is depicted using the frosting finish processing technique, and this is surrounded by a relief of the Four Auspicious Beasts carved on the pedestal on which Yakushi Buddha is seated.
