International Coin Design Competition 2023 Most Excellent Work Gold Medal
Obverse (left) / Reverse (right)
The International Coin Design Competition (ICDC), an annual competition, to which 26 works from 7 countries for "GENERAL category", and 300 works from 4 countries for "STUDENT category", has been held by the Japan Mint since 1998, to encourage creativity and enhance the artistry of coin designs.
The design of the above medal was awarded the prize for Most Excellent Work in the International Coin Design Competition 2023. It was designed under the theme of "Legend of the Janas"; by Ms. Sandra Deiana, who is from Italy.
"Legend of the Janas" is inspired by the legend of the Janas, fascinating legendary female figures from Sardinia, an island in the heart of the Mediterranean, who inhabit the forests and rocks much like fairies. Their etymological origin derives from Diana, the goddess of the woods, the moon, and the queen of birth and growth.
