The Blossom of the Year, "Ranran"
Ranran ("蘭蘭") is a kind of cherry blossom selectively bred in the town of Matsumae in Hokkaido as a cross between the Hakuran and Amayadori varieties. It is named after Ueno Zoo's giant panda, which had just died and was being mourned by the children of Matsumae, because the tightly packed, well-rounded blooms resemble the panda's thick coat. The flowers are almost white, with 15–20 petals each.
