Obverse (left) / Reverse (right)
Takayama Festival
The Takayama Festival is the umbrella term for two festivals, the Sanno Festival (the annual festival of the Hida Sannogu Hie Shrine) and the Hachiman Festival (the annual festival of the Hida-no-Kuni Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine), which are jointly ranked as one of the three great festivals of Japan. The 12 yatai floats paraded during the Sanno Festival on April 14 and 15 and the 11 paraded during the Hachiman Festival on October 9 and 10 have been designated as an Important Tangible Cultural Heritage by the Japanese government. This is an extremely lively event, with its procession of floats with marionettes and musicians performing on top of them as well as people parading dressed in court attire and other traditional clothing, and the Takayama Matsuri no Yatai Gyoji (Takayama spring and autumn float festivals) is included in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as well as being designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the Japanese government.
Obverse: The obverse represents the marionette performing on the Ryujin-tai float during the Sanno Festival, together with the egasumi traditional motif decorated with cherry blossoms.
Reverse: The design features the marionette performing on the Hotei-tai float during the Hachiman Festival, against a backdrop of the crests of all 23 of the Takayama Festival floats.
