Obverse (left) / Reverse (right)
Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival
The Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival is a spring festival of the Takaoka Sekino Shrine
held annually on May 1. On this day, seven gorgeous floats, called Mikurumayama, are pulled through the streets accompanied by graceful music played on Japanese traditional instruments. Each float
has lavishly decorated wheels, railings and beams, which together showcase the splendor of Takaoka’s traditional craftsmanship such as metalsmithing, lacquering and dyeing, along with the legacy of the flamboyant Azuchi-momoyama culture that flourished in the late 16th century. The Takaoka Mikurumayama floats have been designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan, while the Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan as well.
Obverse: The design features the Mikurumayama float of the Niban-machi district being pulled through the Yamacho-suji street in a pleasant May wind.
Reverse: The design features hokodome, decorations atop the seven floats of the Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival.
