Obverse (left) / Reverse (right)
Nachi Fan Festival
The Nachi Fan Festival (Nachi Fire Festival) is the most important festival of Kumano-Nachi Taisha, one of the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano, and has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the Japanese government. During the festival, 12 ogi-mikoshi portable shrines (mikoshi) decorated with fans (ogi) are carried to Hiro Jinja, an auxiliary shrine, and the stone steps to the shrine, which are dim even at noon, are purified with twelve massive torches that illuminate the ranks of cedar trees in a way that is simultaneously majestic and magical. The festival includes performances of ritual performing art (dengaku) offered in prayer for an abundant harvest. This Nachi no Dengaku ritual performing art has also been included on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Obverse:The design represents the ogi-mikoshi being carried along the approach to the shrine in the depths of the forest and the torches purifying the path in advance of the ogi-mikoshi, subtly depicted in the rich color palette of seven-color cloisonné.
Reverse:The design features the Nachi no Dengaku and ogi-mikoshi against the background of a waterfall-stripe pattern inspired by the Nachi Falls.
