World Heritage Coin Sets 10. Shrines and Temples of Nikko
Nikko dates back 1,200 years to the late 8th century, and it had been a sacred ground for mountain worship. The "Shrines and Temples of Nikko, "designated a World Heritage in December 1999, consist of two Shinto shrines (Futarasan-jinja and Toshogu) and a Buddhist temple (Rinno-ji). They include a total of 103 buildings. Harmonious integration of the buildings and the rich natural setting such as immense cryptomeria trees, most over several hundred years old, makes Nikko Japan’s representative religious site with its architectural masterpieces.
