The concept behind this Techno Proof Coin Set is to introduce a technological innovation recently developed by the Japan Mint and incorporate it in a round medal in the center of the set.

The coin set comprises six denominations of proof coins (500 yen nickel-brass, 100 yen cupronickel, 50 yen cupronickel, 10 yen bronze, 5 yen brass, and 1 yen aluminum coins) issued in 2011, all with frosted designs embossed on beautifully polished surfaces, together with a round medal at the center of the set.

This round bicolor medal is a combination of a starling silver outer ring (Weight: 5.4g, Diameter: 27mm) and an inner blue titanium core disk (Weight: 1.4g, Diameter: 17mm) featuring Titanium Coloring Technology. This technology is to produce various colors on titanium by anodizing it. The colors vary the thickness of the surface oxide layer and causes interference fringes. The obverse of this medal features the latent image of traveling space and time glowing with blue color from the ancient Jurassic period to a future city by riding on a time machine.

The reverse side features the rabbit, this year's oriental zodiac symbol, silver grasses, and the kanji characters for this year in the sexagenary cycle (kanoto-u).
