2013 Cherry Blossom Viewing Brilliant Uncirculated Coin Set
The riverside of the Old Yodo River in Osaka city, where the Japan Mint's head office is located, has been well–known as a place of scenic beauty since old times. Especially, the cherry blossoms in spring are very famous. Also in Japan Mint, so many kinds of rare cherry blossoms trees have been planted since the establishment, and in 1883, the Mint Director at the time suggested that the cherry blossoms should be admired not only by Mint employees but all residents of Osaka. From that point forward, the lane along the riverfront has been opened to the general public for a few days each year when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. This was the beginning of "Japan Mint Cherry Blossom Festival", a feature of spring in Osaka. Every year in mid–April when the cherry blossoms come into full bloom, the gate leading to the 560m walk along the Old Yodo River in the Mint has been opened for one week, and around 700,000 to 800,000, or more than a million people gather to enjoy the scenic beauty. Approximately 350 cherry blossom trees with about 120 varieties, including very rare species, fascinate visitors. This event was held from April 16 to 22 this year 2013.
