Sri Lanka, the Shining Island
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, also known as the "shining island", with a land area around 80% the size of Hokkaido Island claims a rich cultural and natural environment with six world cultural heritage and two world natural heritage sites.
Since Japan established diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka in 1952, the two countries have enjoyed a close relationship focused on trade and economic and technical cooperation, and 2012 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
