Old capital, Kyoto, was founded in 794, and since then it was always the capital of old Japan through the Heian, Kamakura, Muromachi, Azuchi-Momoyama and Edo periods for more than one thousand years. Historically and artistically valued temples, shrines, gardens, etc. are attracting a number of visitors from home and abroad. Some were registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site, and you can taste old Japanese culture in Kyoto.
<The Tale of Genji>
The Tale of Genji was written one thousand years ago by Murasaki Shikibu. It is the most ancient surviving full-length (54 chapters) novel. The story unfolds around the hero, Genji, depicting daily life and affairs among aristocrats in the Heian Period (794-1185).
