More information about the Gas Lamps of the Mint as They were at the Time of its Founding

The Mint built a gas factory within the premises and produced a coal gas for gas lamps from 1871, which were used for lighting the streets within the compound around the factories and the housing.

Since the gas supply was started to the public in Osaka in 1905, the gas lamps burned in the beginning of Meiji era had attracted the admiration of the citizens.

The two gas lamps here said to be the oldest for daily use in Japan, still retain the same appearance as they were in front of the Main Gate at the time of its founding.
