The west side of the Mint was used for official residences of Temma "yoriki" (constables) belonging to the Osaka Higshi-machi Bugyosho (Magistrate's Office) in the Edo period. The official residence of Temma "yoriki" Heihachiro (known as Chusai) Oshio was located here.
Heihachiro Oshio served as a "yoriki" for over twenty years and rendered many remarkable services as an able "yoriki".
SENSHINDO was named for a private school founded within his official residence. After his retirement in 1830, he lectured on the teachings of Wang Yang-Ming at this SENSHINDO.
In 1837, he was deeply moved by the suffering from a famine at that time and rose in revolt to give relief to the sufferers. But he failed in his attempt and took his own life.
This is what is called the Tempo Uprising (or the Revolt of Heihachiro Oshio.)
Incidentally, the gate to one official residence of a "yoriki" of the Edo period (that of "yoriki") remain in the neighborhood.
