The 18th summer Olympics was held in Tokyo in 1964. The same medal design has been used since the Amsterdam Olympics.

The 18th winter Olympics was held in Nagano in 1998. Cloisonne enamel and lacquer techniques were used for these medals.

This award was established in 1977 to honor the person who was respected widely by citizens, giving great hope to the society and attaining outstanding achievement. So far 15 people won this award. Japan mint has manufactured plaques of this award since Machiko Hasegawa, the 10th winner of this award.
