The group of Gusuku sites and related properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, designated World Cultural Heritage sites, comprises nine historic sites, all representing the original regional culture of Ryukyu (now Okinawa) form the latter half of the 14th century, when Ryukyu’s unification movement commenced, to the 18th century, many years after establishment of the Kingdom of Ryukyu. During the periods of Sanzan and the kingdom of Ryukyu, Ryukyuans were active in trade with China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asian countries. The Gusuku sites and related properties of the kingdom of Ryukyu evidence this unique history of Okinawa and its cultural climate.
