The cultural property inscribed on the World Heritage List is composed of a set of three historic districts: Ogimachi in Shirakawa-mura (village), Ainokura in Taira-mura and Suganuma in Kamitaira-mura, Ogimachi is located in the Shirakawa-go area in Gifu Prefecture; Ainokura and Suganuma are both located in the Gokayama area in Toyama Prefecture. The Shirakawa-go/Gokayama area is one of the heaviest snowfall areas in Japan, located in the remote mountain region around Mt.Hakusan (elevation 2,702m), one of the highest mountains in Japan. The Gassho-style house is a large farmhouse with a gabled thatched roof. The steep roof demonstrates a practical response to the heavy-snowfall location. Some of the larger houses are of four or five-storied construction with specious attic-level rooms dedicated to sericultural work.
