The twelve Chinese characters in outer part represent the twelve zodiac signs. The twelve signs were once used to represent hours in Japan. For example, the first sign, the Mouse, meant 11 p.m.-1 a.m., and the second sign, the Ox, meant 1 a.m.-3 a.m. Twenty-four hours were divided by the twelve signs.
