Silver Medallion
The Japan Mint is proud to release the medallion featuring Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (designated as the World Cultural Heritage and the National Treasure of Japan). We started National Treasure Medallion Series in 2007 with the Horyuji Medallion, and we issued the Himeji Castle Medallion last year.
The obverse side of the medallion features the Grand Shrine Gate and the Main Sanctuary of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, while the reverse side features a scene from the "Heike-Noukyou (Buddhist Sutras dedicated by the Taira clan in the late Heian Period (794-1185), wishing for the Taira clanfs prosperity)."
Itsukushima Shinto Shrine
Itsukushima Shinto Shrine is located in the Seto Inland Sea of Hiroshima Prefecture. This World Cultural Heritage Site covers about 431.2 hectares and comprises many buildings belonging to Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, together with the sea in which they stand, their background forest and Mt.Misen in Miyajima Island. Miyajima Island is well known as one of Japan's three most beautiful spots. Standing in the sea, Itsukushima Shinto Shrine is widely known for its unique construction and sublime appearance, displaying the artistic beauty of its architectural style called "Shinden Zukuri" at the pinnacle of its glory. First built in the late 6th Century, the Shrine was remodeled into its present beautiful structures by order of Taira-no-Kiyomori in 1168.
