To celebrate the issuance of the 500 yen coin to commemorate the Japan-Brazil Year of Exchange, Centenary of the Japanese Immigration to Brazil, Japan Mint is proud to release a coin set containing the Japan-Brazil year of Exchange, Centenary of the Japanese Immigration to Brazil 500 yen commemorative coin as well as six circulating 2008 Japanese coins, from 1 yen to 500 yen, in uncirculated condition.
The obverse of the paper slipcase features coffee beans, major crop of Brazil, and cherry blossoms known as the national flower of Japan. The obverse of the plastic case depicts departing immigrants and people who came to see them off at Kobe Port, and the reverse side of the plastic case represents Kasato-maru, the first emigrant ship of Japan, come to Santos Port in Brazil in 1908.
