To celebrate the issuance of the 500 yen coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, Japan Mint is proud to release a coin set containing the 50th Anniversary of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition 500 yen commemorative coin as well as six circulating 2007 Japanese coins, from 1 yen to 500 yen, in uncirculated condition.

The obverse of the paper packaging features the first Antarctic Research vessel, "Soya," and Sakhalin dogs, "Taro" (on the right) and "Jiro" (on the left), while the reverse side features the Antarctic station, "Showa," and Adelie penguins on the ice. The obverse of the plastic case depicts the coin set name, and dots on the reverse side of the plastic case represent Japanese research stations in Antarctica. The obverse of the decoration sheet features an iceberg, while the reverse side features aurora borealis high in the sky above Showa station.

The true story of "Taro" and "Jiro" has impressed many people. The second wintering party of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition left for "Syowa Station" to replace the first party in 1958. However, they could not approach the station due to brutal weather. Then, 15 chained dogs were left alone with food for a week at the unmanned station. One year later, when the third party finally arrived at the station, what they saw were "Taro" and "Jiro" who had survived in severe environment.

When the cover of the coin set is opened, the case can be displayed in an L-shape so as to display both sides of the coins.
