The CHUBU CENTRAIR International Airport opened on February 17, 2005. The airport is located off the shore of Aichi prefecture, 35 kilometers south of Nagoya city. As the gateway to this prosperous area and one of the international aviation hubs in Asia, the CHUBU CENTRAIR international Airport is expected to play an important role.
The 500 yen pure silver coin weighs 15.6g (1/2 oz) and has a diameter of 28mm.
The obverse of 500 yen silver coin features the image of the full-scale offshore airport, seen from an airplane.
On the reverse side, a large ribbon is placed to celebrate the opening of the airport. With the latent image technology, two images appear inside of the ribbon both alternately and simultaneously; an airplane on a clock face, which depicts the round-the-clock, twenty-four-a-day service airport; and the bird-eye view of the region, which implies an airplane flies to the world.
Japan Mint is authorized to produce 50,000 pure silver commemorative coins of the Opening of the CHUBU CENTRAIR International Airport. And up to five percent, equal to 2,500 coins, are allocated for overseas markets.
