In June 1890, the frigate Ertugrul arrived in the port of Yokohama carrying a mission of 650 sailors and Rear Admiral Osman Pasha, and the Rear Admiral had an audience with the Emperor Meiji. In September that year, the Ertugrul set sail to return from Yokohama for Istanbul. Unfortunately, she was caught in a typhoon off the Kishu coast (Wakayama Prefecture, Japan), hit a reef, and sank.
The majority of the sailors aboard the Ertugrul died in this maritime disaster. Thanks to selfless rescue efforts by local residents, however, 69 sailors were rescued and later sent home to Turkey in safety by the Japanese Government.
A Memorial for the Ertugrul Frigate Martyrs was constructed in the town of Kushimoto, where the disaster occurred, and a yearly memorial service is held.
This year marks the 120th anniversary of this tragedy, and various events are being held to celebrate "Japan Year 2010 in Turkey." The silver coin incorporated in this proof coin set is produced by the Turkish State Mint to commemorate "Japan Year 2010 in Turkey."
The coin set includes:
Scheduled Mintage: 20,000 sets
