2009 Cherry Blossom Proof Coin Set
Since the Japan Mint has many kinds of cherry trees in our Mint premises, we hold the Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival every April. Since its inception in 1883, the Japan Mint's Cherry Blossom Festival has enjoyed lasting popularity as one of Japan's best-loved spring traditions. We welcome hundreds of thousands guests not only from our country but also from various overseas countries. We are pleased to issue 2009 Cherry Blossom Proof Coin Set to celebrate this year's Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival.

The design on the obverse of the colored silver medallion is the Blossom of the Year, Hirano Nadeshiko; the reverse is coated with gold and features Meganebashi Bridge with cherry blossom. The plastic case and the paper packaging feature Hirano Nadeshiko flowers and a picture of Meganebashi Bridge with cherry blossom.
<Hirano Nadeshiko>
The Hirano Nadeshiko flowering cherry is so named because it is found in Hirano Shrine in Kyoto and its petals have a serrated edge that resembles a dianthus flower (nadeshiko in Japanese). The flowers are pink in color and large in size, with around 40 petals.
<Meganebashi Bridge>
Meganebashi Bridge, built in 1871, was formerly a stone bridge over a creek leading from the Okawa River (the old Yodo River) to a harbor at the Japan Mint. Meganebashi literally means "glasses bridge," and the bridge derives its name from its arch-like shape. Meganebashi Bridge was rebuilt in 1957 in its present form and red color. It still remains as part of the cherry blossom viewing lane even though the creek is now filled in.
The coin set includes:
- Six Japanese legal tender coins in proof condition (a 500 yen nickel-brass proof coin, a 100 yen cupronickel proof coin, a 50 yen cupronickel proof coin, a 10 yen bronze proof coin, a 5 yen brass proof coin and a 1 yen aluminum proof coin),
- A color sterling silver (Ag 92.5%) medal (Weight: 20g, Diameter: 35mm),
- A Certificate of Authenticity (English/Japanese),
- A leather display case,
- A paper slipcase.
